Quinnipiac took control of the offense from the start as senior outfielder Angela Casella (Oceanside, N.Y.) led off with a single in the team's first at bat. The Bobcats scored the lone run of the game in the second inning when they loaded the bases with just one out on the board. With senior Heather Maffeo (Milton, Mass) at the plate, UConn pitcher Tricia Sullivan threw a wild pitch into the dirt allowing Ristow to score from third to earn the 1-0 lead. In the following play, Maffeo lined out to the second baseman who caught the runner on second off base to complete the double play and the inning.
Senior Katie Allendorfer (Glenside, Pa.) and freshman Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) picked up the two other hits on the day for Quinnipiac. Alba recorded up her twelfth hit of the season in the second inning when she singled to the shortstop, and Allendorfer tallied her third double of the season in the fourth.
Schwartzburg came in for relief in the top of the fifth where she struck out the first three batters faced to quickly conclude the inning. The sophomore pitched through the sixth and struck out the first two batters of the seventh inning before battling with Huskies' first baseman Justyne Roy. With the full count, Roy smacked her third double of the season into center field to earn scoring position for UConn. The following batter, Jessica Arremony, also faced several pitches from Schwartzburg before the Bobcats' RHP caught a strike on the outside corner to secure the victory. The save was her first of the season.
Bellush pitched four complete innings for Quinnipiac before Schwartzburg came in for relief. The senior allowed no hits in twelve batters faced to earn her first win of the 2010 season.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend when they head to Stony Brook, N.Y. to compete in the Stony Brook Invitational. The Bobcats first contest will be against Stony Brook at 1 p.m.
