Softball Hosts UConn In 2010 Home Opener Wednesday
The Quinnipiac University softball team will play their home opener tomorrow afternoon as they host the University of Connecticut at the Quinnipiac Softball Field. The Bobcats return home after playing the first 17 games of the season on the road, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. The team most recently defeated Jacksonville State, 2-1, in the final day of competition at the Under Armour Invitational in Southern Florida on Mar. 14.
Scouting the Huskies
UConn currently posts a 6-9 overall record this season,
winning their last four games played in the Stetson Invitational in
DeLand, Fla. Their most recent victory came against tournament-host
Stetson, where the Huskies picked up a 4-3 victory on Mar. 14.
Junior infielder Julianne Towers leads the team offensively as she
bats .340 thus far on the season with 16 hits and 11 runs scored.
Freshman RHP Kiki Saveriano posts a 4-3 record from the circle for
the Huskies, recording a 0.92 ERA with 41 strikeouts.

Throwing Heat
Bobcats' pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo,
Calif.) was named the Akadema/Northeast Conference Player
of the Week yesterday, picking up her first weekly accolade of the
2010 season. The sophomore earns the award after striking out 49
batters in six appearances throughout the week in Southern Florida.
Schwartzburg started three games on the week, picking up all three
wins against Toledo, Pittsburgh and Jacksonville State. The
right-hander threw three complete games including two shutouts on
the weekend. Schwartzburg's award was the second weekly accolade
for the Bobcats this season, as fellow sophomore Alex Murray
(Milford, Mass.) was named Player of the Week on Mar. 1.
To
the Window...To the Wall
Senior third baseman Kelly Wall (Westport, Conn.) was a
key contributor in Quinnipiac offense in the final day of the Under
Armour Showcase on Mar. 14. The Bobcats tallied three runs in two
games on the day, all driven in by Wall. In the first game against
Temple, Wall smacked a solo homerun in the fourth inning to score
the lone Quinnipiac run against the Owls. The homer was Wall's
first of 2010. Later in the day, Wall's two-run double to right in
the first inning scored the only runs the Bobcats needed to defeat
Jacksonville State, earning a 2-0 victory.
All
Together Now
In similar fashion to her fellow captain Wall, senior
Katie Allendorfer (Glenside, Pa.) drove in the three Bobcat runs in
their 3-0 victory against Pittsburgh on Mar. 13 with her first
homerun of 2010. After the two teams battled through five innings
of scoreless play, Allendorfer stepped to the plate with two outs
on the board and runners on second and third and drove a homerun
into center field for the three-run tally.
Speed Demons
Junior outfielder Julie Sini (Elgin, Tex.) picked up her
first stolen base of the 2010 season in the Bobcats' 2-0 win
against Jacksonville State. Through 17 games played, the team has
stolen a combined 15 bases in 20 attempts with freshman Lauren
Salgado (Covina, Calif.) leading the team with four stolen bases in
as many attempts.
Follow my Lead
Freshman Alejandra Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) led Quinnipiac
from the plate during the Under Armour Showcase, consistently
performing through the weekend's four games. The rookie led the
team in batting average on the weekend with a .417 and in hits with
five. Alba also pitched seven innings for the Bobcats in the
Showcase, and struck out eight batters.
