Heather Schwartzburg Named Akadema/Northeast Conference Pitcher Of The Week

HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore RHP Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) of the Quinnipiac University softball team has been named the Akadema/Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week after earning all three wins for the Bobcats in South Florida this past week. This is the first weekly honor for Schwartzburg this season, and her third career Pitcher of the Week award.

Schwartzburg saw appearances in all six games the Bobcats played this weekend, throwing three complete games in the week. The sophomore started the week by setting a personal career-best record as she struck out sixteen batters against the University of Toledo on Mar. 9. The right-hander also pitched two innings of relief in game two against the Rockets, where she struck out one more batter to finish the day with 17 K's.

Quinnipiac went on to play in the Under Armour Showcase during the weekend, hosted by the University of South Florida. Schwartzburg played in all four games of the tournament, getting the start against Pittsburgh and Jacksonville State. She pitched the complete game against both teams, striking out 13 batters in each match-up. The sophomore earned no runs against the Panthers and the Gamecocks, and allowed just six hits on the weekend. Schwartzburg posted a weekly ERA of 0.76 through 27.2 innings pitched, with 49 batters struck out.

Amongst other Northeast Conference pitchers, Schwartzburg ranks first in batters struck out (93) and in innings pitched (65). She also ranks in the top five in ERA (1.18) and opposing bating average (.185).

The Bobcats return to action Wednesday when they host the University of Connecticut in their 2010 home opener. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Softball Field.
