Softball Plays In Under Armour Showcase This Weekend
The Quinnipiac University softball team will head back to the University of South Florida to compete in the Under Armour Showcase this weekend, the second consecutive tournament hosted by the Bulls. The Bobcats will start the weekend with two games on Friday, Mar. 12, starting the day against Central Michigan at 9:30 a.m., followed by an 11:30 a.m. start against Pittsburgh. In its last outing, Quinnipiac split a doubleheader with Toledo on Mar. 9.
Scouting the
Chippewas
Central Michigan
posts a 4-6 record on the year, most recently defeating Penn State,
5-2, on Mar. 9. Sophomore infielder Molly Coldren currently leads
the team offensively as she bats a .406 on the year with 13 hits
and eight RBI. Freshman RHP Kara Dornbos leads the team from the
circle as she posts a 2.33 ERA through 24 innings pitched with 19
strikeouts on the year.
Scouting the
Panthers
Pitt posts a 6-7
record thus far in the 2010 season, defeating Morehead State, 3-2,
in their last outing at the Morehead State Tournament. Junior
outfielder Ashley Amistade posts a .350 batting average through 13
games played, with 14 hits and seven runs scored. Junior Cory
Berliner records a 1.31 ERA in five appearances for the Panthers
while holding opposing batters to a .241 batting
average.
Scouting the
Eagles
Boston College holds
a .500 record so far this season, posting a 7-7 overall record. The
Eagles most recently lost to Harvard, 4-0, in the Central Florida
Tournament on Mar. 7. Senior second baseman Renee Ramos leads the
Eagles offensively batting .441 with 15 hits and 10 RBI. Freshman
RHP Nicole D'Argento posts a 1.51 ERA through five appearances for
Boston College, with 40 strikeouts on the year.
Scouting the
Bulldogs
Drake has compiled a
9-5 record so far this season, most recently defeating Eastern
Illinois, 3-0, in the Razorback Invitational. The Bulldogs are led
by junior catcher Erin Mollohan, who bats .341 in 14 games played
with 14 hits and seven RBI this season. Junior LHP Brynne Dordel
holds a 5-1 record from the circle this season for Drake, posting a
1.31 ERA with 47 strikeouts. Junior RHP Jenna DeLong registers a
1.99 ERA through seven appearances with 70 strikeouts.
Scouting the
Hawks
St. Joseph's posts a
6-5 record thus far on the 2010 season, dropping their last game to
Penn State, 6-3, in the Under Armour Invitational. Freshman catcher
Rochelle Christman leads the team through 11 games, posting a .367
batting average with 11 hits and five runs scored. Sophomore RHP
Erin Gallagher has appeared in all eleven games for the Hawks this
season, recording a 2.80 ERA with 50 strikeouts.
Showcase Schedule
The Bobcats will play
five games over three days in the Under Armour Showcase, playing
two games on Friday and Saturday, and one game on Sunday.
Quinnipiac will take on Central Michigan and Pittsburgh in day one,
playing at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., followed by 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
starts against Boston College and Drake on Saturday. The final game
will be played against St. Joseph's on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Sunday's
game will conclude the Bobcats' 11-game stint in
Florida.
Career Day
Sophomore RHP Heather
Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) struck out 15 batters in game
one of the doubleheader against Toledo on Mar. 9. Schwartzburg
pitched the complete first game against the Rockets, which went
into extra innings due to a tie, and earned her third win of the
year when the Bobcats scored in the ninth inning. The 15 strikeouts
was a career-high for the sophomore, as her previous game-high mark
was 12. Schwartzburg also pitched two innings in game-two,
relieving senior Emily Bellush (Newton, Mass.) in the fifth
inning.
Bring Her In
Bellush
Bellush drove in the
Bobcats' winning run in game one against Toledo on Tuesday. With
freshman Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) positioned on third base
with one out on the board, Bellush smacked a sacrifice fly to drive
in the speedy freshman and game-winning run for the victory in the
ninth inning.
Allendorfer's
Attack
Senior catcher Katie
Allendorfer (Glenside, Pa.) had a great day offensively for
Quinnipiac in the doubleheader against Toledo. Allendorfer went 1-3
in game one with a single and a run scored. In the second game, the
senior went 2-3 with an RBI and a run-scored.
Toil
and Trouble
Freshman Alejandra
Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) picked up the second double of her career in
game one against the Rockets. Alba also picked up an RBI on the
play, as the hit drove around Allendorfer for the Bobcats first run
of the day.
Sini's Smack
Junior outfielder
Julie Sini (Elgin, Tex.) tallied her first hit of the season
against Toledo in game two where the Bobcats posted eight runs
against the Rockets. Sini hit a two-run single for the Bobcats good
for the 18th hit of her career.
Offensive Stance
Several players
contributed to the Bobcats' offensive surge in game two against
Toledo. Salgado went 2-3 with a run scored, senior Angela Casella
(Oceanside, N.Y.) went 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored and senior
Kelly Wall (Westport, Conn.) went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs
scored.
