Softball Splits Doubleheader With Toledo
"I think we had a good day of competition," said head coach Germaine Fairchild. "It was good to get a win; that was what our team needed. It was great the team had the offensive surge in the second game of the day; it gave a good confidence boost for the upcoming weekend. Our pitching still struggles when [Heather] Schwartzburg is not on the mound, and that's where we'll focus our improvements in preparation for the USF Showcase."
Sophomore RHP Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) struck out 15 batters throwing to senior catcher Katie Allendorfer (Glenside, Pa.) in the first game of the day. The single-game strikeout tally was the highest of her career, besting her previous record of 12 in one game.
Allendorfer went 1-3 in the first game with a single, scoring Quinnipiac's first run of the game. Freshman Alejandra Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) scored Allendorfer with an RBI double, the second double of her career. In extra innings, the two teams played using the international tie-break rules, placing freshman Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) on second base to start the ninth. Sophomore Alex Murray (Milford, Mass.) moved Salgado to third with a sacrifice bunt to earn a scoring threat with one out on the board. In the following play, Bellush smacked a sacrifice fly to drive Salgado home to earn the 2-1 Bobcats' victory.
Quinnipiac's pitching struggled to start game two against Toledo. Alba got the start from the circle for the Bobcats, giving up three walks and seven hits in two innings pitched. The Rockets scored seven runs in the second before Quinnipiac placed Bellush on the mound in relief. Toledo put up five more runs in the third inning and Bellush pitched through the fifth inning until the Quinnipiac brought in Schwartzburg to finish the game.
Salgado went 2-3 in game two with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Julie Sini (Elgin, Tex.) hit a two-run single for the Bobcats, her first hit of the 2010 season. Allendorfer and fellow senior Angela Casella (Oceanside, N.Y) each went 2-3 with a run scored, and Allendorfer drove in one RBI, while Casella drove in two. Senior Kelly Wall (Westport, Conn.) completed the Quinnipiac offensive push as she went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in game two.
The Bobcats return to action this weekend when they compete in the Under Armour Showcase hosted by the University of South Florida. The team will kick off the weekend against Central Michigan on Friday, Mar. 12. That game is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
Statistics for the QU-Toledo doubleheader will be available on Monday, March 15.
