Softball Edged By South Florida, 1-0, In Day Three Of Under Armor Invitational

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Sophomore second baseman Alex Murray (Milford, Mass.) went 3-for-3 from the plate as the Quinnipiac University softball team fell to the University of South Florida, 1-0, in Day Three of the Under Armor Invitational Sunday afternoon. Sophomore RHP Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) pitched the complete game for the Bobcats as their record drops to 3-8 on the year.

The Bulls scored the lone run of the game in the top of the first inning. Junior Tara Toscano sparked the offense when she singled through the left side with one out on the board. In the following play, sophomore Laura Fountain grounded out to first base, allowing Toscano to advance to second in scoring position. Senior Alison Savarese drove Toscano home in the next play when she doubled to left center to earn the 1-0 lead.

Murray went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double on the day, while freshman Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) picked up the other hit for Quinnipiac in the game. The Bobcats saw three runners in scoring position in the game, but were unable to cross the plate.

Schwartzburg allowed South Florida just three hits through seven innings pitched. The sophomore struck out seven batters on the day. Bulls' sophomore Brittany Bowles pitched the first 5.2 innings against Quinnipiac, allowing three runs while striking out six. Senior Kristen Gordon finished the game for South Florida, earning the save with two strikeouts.

The Bobcats return to action Tuesday afternoon when they take on Toledo in a doubleheader at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla. The match-up is scheduled to start at 10
