Freshman outfielder Lauren Salgado (Covina, Calif.) scored the lone run for Quinnipiac in the game against Virginia Tech. Salgado got the inning started with a single up the middle before stealing second base in the following play to earn scoring position with no outs on the board. She advanced to third on a wild pitch during the following at bat, and scored on a throw error by the catcher on a fielder's choice play. The run was unearned.
The Bobcats tallied four hits against the Hokies, with freshman Alejandra Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) hitting her first career double in the fifth inning. Murray went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in the game, while Jacqueline Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) had the other hit for Quinnipiac.
Sophomore RHP Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) pitched the complete game, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out five. Virginia Tech junior Ashton Ward pitched seven innings with freshman Jasmin Harrell earning the win as she pitched the eighth.
Quinnipiac was unable to cross the plate against Western Michigan with Murray picking up the lone hit in the game for the Bobcats. Murray finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk against the Broncos. Bellush and Ristow also drew walks in the game for Quinnipiac.
Western Michigan held only a one-run lead heading into the sixth, where they scored twice, followed by two more runs in the seventh to secure the 5-0 victory. Sophomore second baseman Gracie Barstad led the team offensively against the Bobcats, as she tallied two hits and drove in two runs in the game.
Alba got the start from the circle against Western Michigan, pitching 6.2 innings earning five runs and striking out six. Bellush came in for 1/3 innings of relief to close out the game for Quinnipiac. Freshman RHP Diana Patterson pitched the complete game for the Broncos, allowing one hit and striking out eight.
The Bobcats return to action tomorrow afternoon when they play against tournament-host, the University of South Florida. That game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
