SMITHFIELD, R.I. Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) earned her third shutout and eighth win of the season in the Bobcats, 4-0, victory in game two of the doubleheader with Bryant Sunday afternoon. Quinnipiac dropped the first game, 6-1. Kelly Wall (Westport, Conn.) and Joelle Jacobsen (Flemington, N.J.) each picked up four hits on the day as the Bobcats' record improves to 9-22. The Bulldogs' record now stands at 8-24.
Bryant pulled ahead early in the first game, as freshman outfielder Lindsay Martin hit a two-run shot down the right field line in the bottom of the second. Freshman infielder Laura Bowen pushed the Bulldogs' lead to three in the third inning when she was scored from second on a Stephanie Mirando single into center field.
The Bobcats scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Jacobsen got the inning started with a double into center. She was advanced to third on a ground-out to second by Angela Casella (Oceanside, N.Y.) and scored on single by Christine Bourdeau (Seymour, Conn.).
Bryant doubled their score in the bottom of the sixth, giving them the 6-1 lead. Anne Dobmeier opened the inning with a triple to center, followed by a sacrifice fly to center by Mirando. The next two batters walked and were scored on a triple by Martin in the following play.
Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.) pitched 5.2 innings for the Bobcats in her first appearance on the mound this year. The freshman earned six runs on six hits allowed and struck out five. Schwartzburg pitched the final out of the game, allowing one hit before she struck out the final batter.
Schwartzburg had a strong performance in game two, allowing just three hits in the complete game shutout. The offense came alive as well, tallying four runs and nine hits. The Bobcats earned their first run in the top of the second when Heather Maffeo (Milton, Mass.) scored from second on a single up the middle by Julie Sini (Elgin, Texas).
Quinnipiac tallied their remaining three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bourdeau ignited the offense with a single to the left side, and advanced to third on a single by Wall. Allendorfer walked in the following play, loading the bases. Emily Bellush (Newton, Mass.) drilled a two-run double into center field giving the Bobcats the 3-0 lead. Jacobsen singled two batters later, scoring pinch runner Alex Murray to finalize the score at 4-0.
Schwartzburg earned her eighth win of the season in the effort as she struck out twelve batters. Sophomore right hander Samantha Houseal earned the loss for the Bulldogs, earning four runs on seven hits allowed.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, April 8 when they host Fairfield at the Quinnipiac Softball Field. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
