HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore Richard Klauber (Thomaston, Conn.) of the Quinnipiac University men's cross country team was named the Road Runner Sports Northeast Conference Athlete of the Week. This is the first time that the second-year Bobcat has been honored by the league this season after finishing 2008 as the Rookie and Performer of the Year. Klauber was honored by the conference for a second-place finish at the Central Connecticut State University Mini Meet on Saturday morning in New Britain, Conn.
"Rich ran a great race this weekend and battled for position with a Providence duo," said head coach Carolyn Martin. "His confidence is restored and he will be ready to go for this weekend's meet."
Klauber's second-place showing at CCSU helped the Bobcats to a third-place team finish with 81 points. His time of 15:11.83 paced all NEC runners on the short, 5K course as he finished just one spot back of Providence's Michael Anderson for first overall. Klauber's pace of 4:54 helped him to his best placement of the year. During his freshman season, the Quinnipiac harrier received the honor as the league's top weekly runner one time, while being honored as the top rookie on three occasions.
Quinnipiac will look for its fourth consecutive league title on Saturday when it hosts the 2009 NEC Cross Country Championships. The conference meet will take place on the 8K Quinnipiac Cross Country Course and is set to begin at 11 a.m.
