HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University men's indoor track team begins its 2008-09 season at the Yale Season Opener on Saturday at 11:40 a.m. at Yale's Coxe Cage. The Bobcats come into the indoor track season having won their third consecutive Northeast Conference Cross Country Championship at Holmdel Park, N.J., on Nov. 2. Freshman Richard Klauber (Thomaston, Conn.) was named the NEC Men's Cross Country Outstanding Performer and Rookie of the Year during the fall season. Last year, Tyler Dinnan (Juneau, Alaska) won the 5000 meter race at the season-opening meet in New Haven with a time of 15:17.61.
Head Coach Shawn Green recently named Steve Pilch (Medford Lakes, N.J.), Jack McDonald (Cheshire, Conn.) and Nick Rezendes (Ledyard, Conn.) as captains for the 2008-09 season. McDonald, Dinnan and Rezendes will all be running in the 3000 meter race. John Beckshaw (Medford, Mass.), David Copolla (Reading, Mass.), John Healy (Middletown, N.J.) and Andrew Sullivan (Ellington, Mass.) will also be running in the 3000M.
Klauber will run in the 5000M for the first time in his career. Fellow freshman Dan Roark (Dracut, Mass.) is also competing in his first race at that distance. Addison Pellerano (Surry, Maine), John Greenlaw (Hampstead, N.H.) and Taylor Roberts (Newburyport, Mass.) round out the quintet of Bobcats in the 5000M. Quinnipiac runners will also compete in the 800M, 400M and 4x400M races.
"We are looking for this meet to be an indication of the strong season ahead," said Green. "I have great expectations for this team which is comprised of a lot of talented student athletes."
Also competing in the meet is the University of New Haven, Southern Connecticut, Trinity, Manhattan and meet-hosts Yale.
