HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's tennis team has received commitments from junior transfer Jonas Kuwert (Jesteberg, Germany) and incoming freshmen Willem van Biezen (Warmond, Netherlands) and Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, N.Y.) to join the Bobcats' roster for the 2014-15 season, head coach Mike Quitko announced on Monday, June 9, 2014.
"We are looking forward to the additions of Jonas, Willem and Kyle to our roster next year," said Quitko, who recently finished up his 23rd season at Quinnipiac. "Both players will be able to contribute and make us deeper than we have ever been. Their work ethic and character will fit right in with Julian (Rozenstein) and the returning players."
Hometown: Jesteberg, Germany
Kuwert comes to Quinnipiac after a two-year stint with Old Dominion University, a longstanding member of Conference USA. In 2013-14, Kuwert fluctuated from No. 2 singles to No. 5 singles, but saw most of his matches come at No. 2 and No. 4. He was 10-7 on the season in singles, which included a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles in a 4-3 win over the College of Charleston – a team that was ranked No. 64 in the country at the time. ODU finished the season with a 12-10 record, reaching the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Championships.
Kuwert brings 35 career wins to Quinnipiac, compiling 19 in 2012-13 and 16 more in 2013-14. He has an 18-16 overall record at singles and a 17-14 overall record at doubles. In 2012-13, he was 8-9 in singles with one of his wins coming over Zach Krumholz of nationally-ranked No. 50 Yale (at the time). He also went 9-6 at doubles. Prior to college, Kuwert was ranked as high as No. 10 in Germany (Under-18) and reached No. 132 in the men's open division.
Willem van Biezen
Hometown: Warmond, The Netherlands
van Biezen will begin his collegiate career at Quinnipiac this fall, coming to Hamden all the way from Warmond - a village in the western Netherlands. The 6-1 standout attended high school at Rijnlands Lyceum Sassenheim while spending the better part of his free time at the OLTC Oegstgeest Tennis Club. van Biezen has several years of competitive international tennis experience which included a top-30 ranking in the Dutch National Youth program. His talents also guided him to the Master's Finals in 2012 and 2013 and a national championship in the senior competition (2013). van Biezen, who is also an avid soccer fan, will seek a degree in economics from Quinnipiac University.

High School: Half Hollow Hills East
Alper hails from Dix Hills, N.Y. and is set to begin his collegiate career after a very successful high school run from 2010-2014. A four-year letter-winner at Half Hollow Hills East High School, Alper helped the team to a fifth straight Suffolk County team title this past season, which featured the team's 100th straight win against conference opponents. The Thunderbirds finished 21-0 overall and 10-0 against Suffolk County teams en route to the historic season. Alper also had success in the individual tournament as well, advancing to the Suffolk County Championship Final. Alper's qualified for the NYSPHSAA State Championship and advanced to the second round of competition. A year earlier, Alper and his partner advanced to the quarterfinals of the Doubles State Championship.
In 2013-14, the Quinnipiac men's tennis team was forced to overcome a slew of injuries this season, and nearly played their way into the 2014 MAAC Championships. The Bobcats finished fifth in the league standings with a 3-4 record, while earning an additional four wins in non-conference play. Rookie standout Kei Ezaka was tabbed MAAC Rookie of the Year after posting a 36-win season and a 19-10 record in singles. Eric Ambrosio also shined for the Bobcats, going 23-8 in singles to post the second most wins in Quinnipiac Division I history. Both will return this fall.
