Bobcats Fall in Final Non-Conference Match of the Season, 6-1
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team dropped its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bobcats surrendered a 6-1 decision to Stony Brook in Long Island, N.Y. Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) picked up the lone point for the visitors.
The match was Quinnipiac's final test before the biggest match of the year on Friday, April 18. Quinnipiac (7-10) welcomes Monmouth University to the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts, as the Bobcats seek a fourth MAAC win in hopes of clinching the final spot in the upcoming MAAC Championships. With a QU win and a Fairfield loss to Saint Peter's, the last playoff spot would belong to Quinnipiac.
On Wednesday, Stony Brook picked up its 10th win of the season by collecting the doubles point and five out of the six singles points. Quinnipiac's tally came at No. 1 singles, where Ezaka notched his third straight and 19th win of the season. The Ojai, Calif. native defeated Alexandre Felisa in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, to negate the sweep.
The Bobcats also fared well at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, where Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) and Carlos Fernandez (Mexico City, Mexico) forced the match to go three sets. Haraguchi won the first set, 7-5, but fell 6-2 in the second and 10-7 in the super-set. Fernandez battled back from a first-set loss with a 6-2 win in the second frame, but fell in the third set, 10-7.
Ezaka and Haraguchi held their own in doubles as well, playing No. 2 doubles to a 7-7 draw before the match was deemed unfinished.
