HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Niagara University on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats dropped a 6-1 decision on Senior Day at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Quinnipiac (6-9) fell to 3-3 in MAAC play, which puts the Bobcats in fourth place at the moment. However, Fairfield University stands right behind Quinnipiac at 2-3 in league play – with two matches against two of the MAAC's bottom tier teams left on the schedule. The Bobcats need a win against Monmouth next Thursday, and a Fairfield loss to collect the fourth and final playoff spot. Fairfield also holds the tie-breaker with Quinnipiac.
Two evenly matched opponents took the courts on Saturday, making the doubles point crucial in the showdown. Quinnipiac battled but lost at No. 1 and No. 3 to leave Niagara with the first tally of the match. Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) won convincingly at No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 win over David Raymond and Olivier Dufour-Coursol. They improved to 8-2 on the season.
Fighting a slew of injuries and a talented Niagara squad proved to be too much to overcome for the Bobcats. The Purple Eagles won five out of the six matches to claim the victory, placing them in great position to qualify for the tournament. The lone point for Quinnipiac came at No. 1, where Ezaka picked up his second win of the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Michael Elortegui. It was his 33rd career win at Quinnipiac.
