ORLANDO, Fla. – Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) won at No. 1 singles and the Bobcats claimed the doubles point on Monday afternoon, but the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team dropped a non-conference match to South Dakota State, 5-2, in the opening match of its annual Spring Break Trip.
Quinnipiac, now 5-3 on the season, scored the match's first point in the doubles segment. Ezaka and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) defeated Andrea Boglić and Lucas Pereira, 8-5, at No. 2; and Carlos Fernandez (Mexico City, Mexico) and Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, D.R.) cruised past Lovro Curcija and Gary Notkin, 8-2, at No. 3. The Bobcats fell at No. 1 but had already claimed the first point.
Competition at singles told a different story though, as five Jackrabbit wins filled the score sheet. Quinnipiac's lone win came at No. 1 where Ezaka defeated South Dakota State's ace Boglić in thrilling fashion. He battled back from a first set loss, 2-6, and earned a 7-5 victory in the second set and clinched the point with a 10-5 triumph in the tie-break. Ambrosio also forced a tie-break but fell 10-8 to Parker Lawley.
