PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and freshman Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) each added wins to their season totals on Sunday, but the Quinnipiac men's tennis team ran into a tough Brown squad as the Bears spoiled the Bobcats' 2014 opener with a 5-2 win inside the Pizzitola Center in Providence. The Bears won two doubles matches and added four singles wins to defeat the Bobcats in the non-conference clash.
Brown opened up doubles play with wins at the first and third flights as Brandon Burke and William Spector defeated Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) and Carlos Fernandez, 6-4, at No. 1, and Ivan Kravtchenko and Thomas Nath won 6-4 over Ryan Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) at No. 3.
Quinnipiac looked as though it would have claimed the No. 2 flight where Ambrosio and Ezaka carried a lead deep into the match. However, the match went unfinished when Brown solidified the point with wins in the other two flights.
Ambrosio posted Quinnipiac's first point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over David Neff at No. 3 singles, but Brown answered with wins at the No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 flights. Ezaka notched the Bobcats' second point with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Justin To at No. 1.
Haraguchi nearly had a third point for the visitors, but fell short in a third-set tie-break, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2.
