NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team began a three-day tournament with players from around the state on Friday morning at the Connecticut State Championships. The event, which takes place at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, features players from Fairfield, Hartford, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, the University of Connecticut and Yale, all of whom are battling for singles and doubles championships.
Quinnipiac picked up multiple wins on the day, starting with a pair of victories in the doubles segment. In the opening round, Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) defeated Fairfield's Reece Breault and R.J. Mirabile, 8-6; and Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) defeated Luka Bagi and Ryan Wennberg of Sacred Heart, 8-6.
However, both Bobcat pairings fell in the next round to conclude Quinnipiac's efforts in doubles. Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.), and Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and Ben Teicher (Kendall Park, N.J.) also competed in doubles but fell in the opening round.
Quinnipiac fared better in the singles segment, as the Bobcats again picked up several wins and advanced three players into the Round of 16. Ezaka earned a first round bye and advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over UConn's Andrew Ginzberg; Barbero defeated Hartford's Alex Holdstein in the opening round, and then moved forward with a 6-1, 5-6, 10-7 win over UConn's Mark HoSang; Ambrosio defeated RJ Mirabile in his first match and then defeated Wayne Harrell (UConn), 6-5, 6-2, to stay alive in the tournament.
Two others, Patrick Sell and Ryoma Haraguchi, collected a win in the first round, but failed to advance in the second frame. Sell defeated UConn's Josh Palmer, 6-2, 6-2, in his first match, but fell to Yale's Martin Svenning after that. Haraguchi knocked off Sacred Heart's Brian Power, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6, but was defeated by Yale's Photos Photiades to end his run. Roser and Grullon both fell in their opening matches.
Day two of the Connecticut State Championships begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
