HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team continued its winning ways on Saturday, as four Bobcats advanced to the semifinals of singles competition at the 2013 Quinnipiac Invitational at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Juniors Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina), sophomore Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and freshman Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) will all compete for a Flight title tomorrow morning.
"The team competed well today proving that fierce competition brings out the best in them," said head coach Mike Quitko. "We will resume play tomorrow and are expecting another day of great performances from the team."
The Bobcats garnered the most success in Flight B, as Ambrosio and Barbero advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets. Ambrosio defeated Fairfield's Peter Colliard, 6-0, 6-3, in his first match, and then defeated Parker Goldstein of UConn by a score of 6-3, 6-3 to move on in the top half. Barbero scored two wins in the bottom half by defeating Kevin Budrawich (Sacred Heart) and Joshua Rubinstein (Bryant). Barbero took both matches in straight sets and will face an opponent from Villanova tomorrow morning.
Ezaka served as the lone Bobcat to advance in Flight A, as the rookie sensation extended his unbeaten streak to nine straight with two more wins. He needed just four total sets to move on by defeating Jimmy Rindo (Bentley) and Nicholas Sharwarko (Hartford) for a spot in his third consecutive semifinals. He will also take on an opponent from Villanova.
Roser was the fourth name to claim a spot in the semifinals as he and his powerful serve helped him into the final four. Roser knocked off an opponent from UConn in the first round and then topped a player from Bryant to earn a spot in the next round.
Ezaka competed in "A" singles and defeated Jimmy Rindo of Bentley in the first round with a score of 7-6 (4), 6-2 and advanced to win over Nicholas Sharwarko of the University of Hartford with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) also competed in Flight A and defeated Brian Power of Sacred Heart, 7-6 (6), 6-4, in the first round, but fell to UConn's Wayne Harrell in a 1-6, 6-2, 10-5 in the quarterfinals. Freshman Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Ben Teicher(Kendall Park, N.J.) also earned first-round victories but saw their day concluded with losses in the quarterfinals.
Competition wraps up on Sunday, October 6 beginning at 9am at the QU tennis courts where Ambrosio, Barbero, Ezaka, and Roser are in search of Flight titles.
