Eight Teams Featured at Quinnipiac University Men’s Tennis Invitational This Weekend

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Bobcats men's tennis team will host the  annual Quinnipiac University Invitational this weekend, a three-day event set to begin on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Joining the Bobcats on the courts this year will be UConn, Sacred Heart, Bryant, Villanova, Hartford, Bentley and fellow MAAC affiliate Fairfield.

"We are once again looking forward to hosting this event," said head coach Mike Quitko, who has 506 career wins to his name. "We've been playing at a really high level so far and are hoping to carry it over into this weekend. This will be a great tournament for our guys."

In their most recent outing, the Bobcats garnered three titles at the UConn Invitational up in Storrs at the Connecticut Tennis Courts. Junior Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and freshman Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) each won their respective flights on Sunday morning, while Ezaka and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, N.Y.) earned the Flight A Doubles Title on Saturday.

"We had a great all-around showing at the UConn Invite," said Quitko. "Eric and Kei really played well and proved to be two of the top players in the tournament. It's great to see so many individual wins so early in the season."

Ambrosio picked up wins in the quarterfinals and the semifinals to advance to the finals of Flight C. After two straight-set victories in his first two matches, Ambrosio made it a clean sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Stefan Lemire of Boston University. The 5-7 junior from Lloyd Harbor, N.Y. has 64 wins in just his third year with the program.

Ezaka joined Ambrosio with a spot in the finals after advancing through the first two rounds of the Flight A bracket. Ezaka needed three sets to do it, but kept his unbeaten singles streak alive with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 victory over Hartford's Jordan Badenko. Ezaka improved to 8-0 in singles and is 12-1 through his first four weeks of collegiate competition.

Quinnipiac had three Bobcats participating on Sunday as Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) was also in search of another win. Despite a valiant effort after dropping the first set, Sell was outlasted in the tie-breaker, 10-8, by UConn's Jacob Spreyer.

The Quinnipiac Invitational begins at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Competition resumes the following day, Saturday, October 5, and then wraps up on Sunday, October 6. Play for the weekend begins at 9 a.m. on both days.
