Men’s Tennis Sweeps St. Francis Brooklyn in Home-Opener

HAMDEN, Conn. – It was a clean sweep for the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bobcats took all seven points against St. Francis Brooklyn at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Quinnipiac, now 1-0 on the season, claimed all three matches in doubles, and did not surrender a set in singles.

"St. Francis Brooklyn has improved immensely over the past few seasons, so it was great to earn a victory without dropping a point," said head coach Mike Quitko, who enters his 23rd season at the helm of the program. "All around, both in doubles and singles, we played very well and hope we can carry this momentum into our next invitational."

Quinnipiac kicked off the match with a strong showing in the doubles, taking all three flights in the segment. Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Patrick Sell (Neuenbuerg, Germany) defeated Francesc Terns and Victor Blasco, 8-3, at No. 1; Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Kei Ezaka (Ojai, Calif.) defeated Ricardo Garcia and Sacha Singh, 8-2, at No. 2; and Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Alain Grullon (Santo Domingo, D.R.) blanked James Chung and Andrea Proto, 8-0, at No. 3. Dating back to last season, Quinnipiac has now earned the doubles point in four straight regular-season matchups.

The Bobcats carried the momentum into the singles portion of the competition, winning all six flights in straight sets. Ezaka remained unbeaten in singles play (5-0) with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1; Sell picked up his first collegiate win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2; Ambrosio earned his 61st career win at No. 3; Barbero picked up career win No. 54 with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 4; Roser snatched his first singles win of the 2013 season with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5; and Grullon completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 – his fifth career win at Quinnipiac.

The Bobcats have defeated the Terriers twice now since renewing the rivalry last season. Quinnipiac swept St. Francis Brooklyn, 7-0, in 2012-13.
