Three Bobcats Advance Through First Two Rounds At Connecticut State Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Just three days after the completion of the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional tournament, the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team began a three-day tournament with players from around the state on Friday morning for the Connecticut State Championships.  The event, which takes place at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, features players from Fairfield, Hartford, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, the University of Connecticut and Yale, all of whom are battling for the singles and doubles titles.

Quinnipiac fared well in the singles portion of competition on day one, as three Bobcats advanced through the first two rounds. In the bottom half of the bracket, senior Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) took full advantage of a first-round bye and defeated Sacred Heart's Justin Pagan, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5, in the round of 32. Barbero will face Yale's Zach Dean tomorrow morning in the round of 16.

Fellow classmate senior Fahoum Fahoum (Haifa, Israel) also earned a first-round bye and then went on to defeat UConn's Zac McEntee, 4-6, 6-1, 10-4, in the second round. He is scheduled to square off against Yale's Daniel Hoffman tomorrow morning in the third round.

Sophomore Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) served as the lone Bobcats to collect two wins in singles. Ambrosio defeated Hartford's Edgardo Ureta, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 64 and then topped Yale's Zach Krumholz, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0, in the second round. Ambrosio will face Fairfield's Ofir Soloman tomorrow morning.

Freshman Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and senior Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) also picked up wins in singles play. Roser defeated UConn's Peter Surovic, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round, but fell to Fairfield's Ian Tesmond, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 32. Lane defeated Sacred Heart's Matt Dean, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round, but then fell to Yale's Daniel Faierman, 6-2, 7-5, in his second match.

Seniors Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.), Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) and Devon Jerome (Stamford, Conn.) each fell in the first round but will try their luck in consolation's tomorrow morning.

Quinnipiac also took part in the doubles tournament, but failed to advance a group into the quarterfinals. Fahoum and Roser and Barbero and Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) each won in the first round but couldn't advance with a win in the second round.

Day two of the Connecticut State Championships begins tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
