NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team competed in the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon, an annual championship hosted by Yale University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 87 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
The Bobcats took the court on Thursday and Friday, beginning with sophomore Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and senior Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.). Unfortunately neither athlete was able to advance in the regional qualifier though, each suffering losses in the opening round. Ambrosio was upended by UConn's Ryan Carr, 6-4, 7-5, while Lane was defeated by Niagara's David Raymond, 6-0, 6-0.
Quinnipiac also featured a duo in the Main Doubles Draw, where senior Fahoum Fahoum (Haifa, Israel) and Lane faced off against a pair from Boston College of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Fahoum and Lane fell short by the final score of 8-1 in the opening round.
Sophomore Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) served as the lone Bobcat in the Main Singles Draw and drew a first round match-up with Cornell. Barbero went down in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2, as Quoc-Daniel Nguyen advanced to the second round.
The Bobcats will continue competition at ITA Regionals tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m.
