Men's Tennis Wraps Up 10th Annual Quinnipiac Invitational
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team concluded play at the 10th annual Quinnipiac Invitational on Sunday morning at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Freshman Luke Roser (Bernardsville, N.J.) and senior Devon Jerome (Stamford, Conn.) both took the court for the Bobcats in the final two rounds of their respective flights.
After a pair of victories in main draw Flight "C" singles yesterday, Roser took the court against Sacred Heart John Lopresti. After Roser took the first set uncontested at 6-0, Lopresti roared back with a dominating second set winning, 6-1. In the decisive tiebreaker, Roser sealed the victory with some impressive rallies late, taking control of the points early and finishing it off with a resounding forehand that had all his teammates watching on their feet. Roser won the tiebreak 10-7 to earn a spot in the finals.
The freshman couldn't keep his streak alive however as he saw his tournament come to close in the championship round against Villanova's Tim Abbracciamento. The match finished with Abbracciamento winning in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to win the Flight "C" singles bracket. Roser defeated opponents from Hofstra and Villanova on Saturday and Sacred Heart on Sunday to highlight his run in the tournament.
Joining Roser with a pair of victories yesterday was the Stamford, Conn. native, Devon Jerome. Jerome advanced to the semifinals after defeating opponents from Bentley and Villanova in Flight "D". Unfortunately, Jerome concluded his run in his next match, falling short to Bryant's Guilliamue Sabourin, 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Jerome began the match with a dominating serve and consistent forehand strokes to build a 3-0 lead in the first set before advancing with a 6-4 opening set victory. Sabourin bounced back in the second before taking control of the tiebreak and the match. Playing in his first season with the Bobcats, the result marks the second straight tournament Jerome has advanced to the semifinals after doing so at the UConn Invitational on Sept. 29.
The Bobcats do not have a lot of time before their next match, which also happens to be their first dual match of the 2012-13 season. Quinnipiac heads up to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday, October 10 for a showdown with intrastate rival, UConn. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
