HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team opened its 2012 Northeast Conference schedule with a victory on Sunday afternoon, as the Bobcats defeated Saint Francis (Pa.), 5-2, at home on the Indoor Tennis Courts. With the win, QU improves to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in league competition.
"I am pleased to come away with our first conference win of the year," said Head Coach Mike Quitko. "Saint Francis (Pa.) competed very hard and forced us to make some key shots at critical junctures in the match."
The Red Flash controlled the doubles' portion of the contest, taking two out of three from the Bobcats. Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Garret Lane edged Lawson Barter and Juan Pardo, 8-5, for the lone triumph in the segment.
Quinnipiac bounced back in singles' action though, recording wins in five out of the six match-ups. Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.), James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.), Lane, Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) and John Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) each prevailed for their first conference wins of the season.
Saint Francis (Pa.), now 1-10 overall and 0-1 in the league, will head over to intrastate rival Robert Morris next. They take on the Colonials on March 17 at 9 a.m.
Quinnipiac is back in action with its Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla. The Bobcats will take on three opponents in four days, beginning with Northern Illinois on March 12. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
