Men's Tennis Sweeps Fordham, 7-0

HAMDEN. Conn. - Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) both earned double wins as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team earned its first win of the season, defeating Fordham, 7-0, Sunday afternoon on the Quinnipiac Indoor Tennis Courts. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 1-3, while the Rams fall to 0-7.

The Bobcats picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and 2. Weeden paired with Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) to defeat Austin Shoup and Ken Fukumoto, 8-2, at No. 1, while Lazerowich and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) got past Eli Plangger and Nick Kelly, 8-6, at No. 2. Fordham took its lone win on the day at No. 3 doubles. The Bobcats' Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) fell, 8-7, to Dan Kane-West and Alex DeRienzo.

Quinnipiac picked up its second point of the day when Lazerowich defeated Fukumoto, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 3. Weeden made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2, decision against DeRienzo. Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory against Kane-West at No. 4.

With the match in hand, Nelson, Ben Shapiro (Katonah, N.Y.) and Brett Francis (Glastonbury, Conn.) completed the sweep with wins at No. 2, 5 and 6. Nelson defeated Shoup, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, while Shapiro got past Kevin Maloney, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). Francis gutted out a 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 victory at No. 6.

The Bobcats return to action Feb. 27, when they play host to the University of Hartford. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
