October 31, 2010 NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's tennis duo of Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) and Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) fell in the finals of the Connecticut State Championships at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center, as the Bobcats completed the fall portion of their schedule. Weeden and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) also reached the quarterfinals of the singles draw. Weeden was honored with the Sportsmanship Award, as decided by the officials, following the tournament.

Weeden and Mikkelson defeated a pair of Yale duos in the quarterfinals and semifinals. The Bobcats defeated Zachary Dean and Tommy Ratchford, 8-5, in the quarterfinals, before edging Erik Blumenkrantz and Jordan Abergel, 9-7, in the semifinals. Weeden and Mikkelson fell to Fairfield's Joe Michalisin, 8-5, in the finals.

Weeden defeated Yale's Kyle Dawson, 5-7, 6-4, 12-10, in the singles Round of 16, while Kwei defeated Fairfield's R.J. Mirabile, 4-6, 6-3, 10-2, to advance to the quarterfinals. Weeden was defeated by reigning NEC Player of the Year Kirill Kasyanov, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. Kasyanov went on to win the championship. Kwei was defeated by Fairfield's Dan Sauter, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

Kwei also paired with Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) to win the First Round Doubles Consolation Championship. The duo defeated Sacred Heart's Michael Syer and Jinal Shah, 8-2, Fairfield's Mark Kremheller and Bjorn Merinder, 8-6, and Nic Visinski (UConn)/John Harvey (Sacred Heart), 8-4, en route to the title.

The duo of Brett Francis (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) also picked up a First Round Doubles Consolation victory, defeating Hartford's Edgardo Ureta and Filip Miletic, 8-0.

Morgenstern won a pair of First Round Singles Consolation matches, defeating Joel de los Santos, 6-2, 6-0, and UConn's Teddy Margules, 4-0, retired. Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) and Ben Shapiro (Katonah, N.Y.) also won once each in the First Round Singles Consolation. Nelson defeated Visinski, 6-3, 6-3, while Shapiro edged Conner Masciotra, 4-6, 6-1, 10-5.

Lazerowich also won once in the Second Round Doubles Consolation, defeating UConn's Ricardo Cardona, 6-4, 7-5.

The Bobcats begin the spring semester schedule Feb. 5, when they travel to Boston University. The match is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
