Weeden Breezes Through ITA Northeast Regional Qualifying

HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac University men's tennis sophomore Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) won a pair of qualifying matches to advance to the ITA Northeast Regional Championship singles main draw Thursday at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

Weeden defeated Stony Brook's Francesco Arciuli, 6-1, 6-2, in his first match before clinching a spot in the main draw with a 6-2, 6-3, decision against Marist's Joris Van Eck. He'll face Hofstra's Antonio Pena in tomorrow's main draw first round, while teammate Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) drew Brown's Brandon Burke in the first round.

James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Brett Francis (Glastonbury, Conn.) also took part in qualifying. Kwei defeated Boston College's Michael McGinnis, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, before retiring due to injury in the third set to St. Bonaventure's Elliot Fanshel with the score 6-7, 7-5, 3-0, to fall just short of qualifying for the main draw. Francis fell to Monmouth's David Sherwood, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round.

ITA Northeast Regional action continues from the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center Friday.
