Men's Tennis Defeats Monmouth In NEC Opener, 4-3

HAMDEN, Conn. - Seniors John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) and Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) earned double wins as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team won its Northeast Conference opener over Monmouth, 4-3, Saturday afternoon on the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 5-1 (1-0 NEC), while the Hawks fall to 5-7 (0-1 NEC).

Hughes paired with Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) to defeat David Sherwood and Harvey Bhalla, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, before clinching the team victory with a 6-4, 6-2, decision at No. 2 singles over Ian Terpilowski.

Feldman combined with Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) on an 8-7 victory over Ben Dashiell and Oliver Grimbly, before making quick work of Grimbly at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) earned his first win of the season after returning to the line-up in yesterday's match at Harvard. Lane defeated Dashiell, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5.

Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) defeated Laurence Heads and Terpilowski, 8-5, to sweep the doubles point. Mikkelson was defeated at No. 1 singles by Heads, 7-5, 6-1, while Kwei also fell at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-4, to Bhalla.

Sherwood outlasted Weeden in a third-set tie-breaker at No. 3, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0), to account for the final tally.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow when they travel to Smithfield, R.I., to face Northeast Conference foe Bryant. Matches from the Bryant Tennis Complex are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
