HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) won the Flight D Singles Championship as the Bobcats' men's tennis team completed a successful Quinnipiac Invitational Sunday. Kraus defeated teammate Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) in the finals, while John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) fell in the finals of Flight A.
Kraus defeated a pair of freshmen teammates in the semifinals and finals to earn his first collegiate tournament championship. He defeated Justin Gerstl (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-4, before getting past Nelson, 6-2, 2-0, retired, in the finals. Nelson edged Fairfield's Bob Kelly, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8, in the semifinals.
Hughes defeated Fairfield's Dan Sauter, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals before Sacred Heart's Kirill Kasyanov was too much in the finals, defeating Hughes, 6-1, 6-1.
In other action, James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) were defeated by Fairfield players in the Flight B and C semifinals, respectively. Kwei fell to Joe Michalisin, 6-3, 6-2, while Feldman was outlasted by Ryan Berthod, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.
Three Bobcats return to action Thursday and Friday at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. Kwei will play in Thursday's qualifying action, while Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and Hughes commence play in the main draw on Friday at Dartmouth.
