Six Bobcats Reach Singles Semifinals At Quinnipiac Invitational
HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and sophomore James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) won the Flight A Doubles Championship, while five Bobcats advanced to the singles semifinals during Day 2 of the 7th Annual Quinnipiac Men's Tennis Invitational, Saturday at the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Mikkelson and Kwei defeated UConn's Dave Adams and Jai Yoon, 8-5, in the Flight A Championship Match. The win pushed the tandem's winning streak to seven, including a pair of tournament championships. Mikkelson and Kwei also won the top flight at the UConn Invitational, Sept. 26.
John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.), Kwei, Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.), Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.), Justin Gerstl (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) all advanced to the semifinals in their respective singles flights.
Following a first-round bye, Hughes defeated Alex Frakes of St. Peter's, 6-0, 6-2, in the Flight A Quarterfinals. Kwei won a pair of Flight B matches against opponents from Sacred Heart and UConn to reach the Flight B Semifinals. The Bobcats' sophomore defeated the Pioneers' Chadd Sullo, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening round before outlasting UConn's Dave Adams, 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals.
Feldman, who advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight C by virtue of a bye, took three sets to defeat Sacred Heart's Albert Christie, 6-2, 6-7, 10-8.
Kraus edged UConn's Matt Burns in the Flight D Quarterfinals, 7-6, 5-7, 10-7. He'll face Gerstl in tomorrow's semifinals. The freshman won a pair of matches, the first of his career, in straight sets against Fairfield's Mark Kremheller and Sacred Heart's John Harvey. Gerstl beat Kremheller, 6-2, 6-2, in the opening round, before defeating Harvey, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Nelson wrapped up the day with a 7-6, 7-6, victory against Fairfield's Mike Lessing. The win is Nelson's first collegiate singles victory, and comes a day after the freshman paired with fellow first-year player Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) to advance to the Flight B Doubles Championship Match. The duo was defeated by UConn's Wei Lin and Burns.
Mikkelson also won a Flight A singles match before retiring due to injury. The junior beat Sacred Heart's Chris Ujkic, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round. He then won the first set against UConn's Yoon, 7-5, in the semifinals. Mikkelson then fell, 7-6, in the second set. Down 1-0 in the third-set tie-breaker, he was forced to retire due to injury.
Singles semifinal and championship round action is scheduled to begin Sunday at 9 a.m.
