Men's Tennis Finds Success on Day 1 at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. - Junior Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and sophomore James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) paired to earn a spot in the Flight A Doubles Championship Match, while freshmen Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) and Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) corralled a berth in the Flight B Doubles Championship Match, as the Bobcats opened the 7th Annual Quinnipiac Men's Tennis Invitational successfully, Friday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Indoor Tennis Courts.

Mikkelson and Kwei pushed their doubles winning streak to six straight with three wins on the evening. The duo defeated UConn's Joe Goldstein and Andrew Marcus, 8-5, in the Round of 16, before taking care of Sacred Heart's Kirill Kasyanov and Nick Mazzarese, also by a score of 8-5, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Kwei and Mikkelson defeated Sacred Heart's Adam Gart and Michael Syer, 8-6.

Nelson, playing his first collegiate matches, combined with Lazerowich to win a pair of matches and advance to the finals of Flight B. The Bobcats' freshmen defeated UConn's Tom Cook and Ricardo Cardona, as well as Sacred Heart's Albert Christie and Chadd Sullo, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Both matches were decided by 8-4 margins.

Both Quinnipiac doubles tandems will contend for their respective flight championships on Sunday.

The duo of Quinnipiac's Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) and Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) earned a victory in the Flight B quarterfinals against Tony Wilkey and J.J. Gramatica, 8-5. The Bobcats' pair then fell in the semifinals to UConn's Matt Burns and Wei Lin, 8-3.

Quinnipiac Invitational action resumes tomorrow at 9 a.m., when singles play commences. Weather permitting, main draw matches will be played on the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts.
