STORRS, Conn. - Junior Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and sophomore James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) paired to earn the Flight "A" Doubles Championship as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team found continued success on Day 2 at the UConn Invitational Saturday. In addition to his victories with Mikkelson, Kwei advanced to the Flight "B" Singles Championship, where he'll face freshman teammate Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.). Senior Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) is also still alive in the Flight "C" Singles, having reached the semifinals.
Mikkelson and Kwei, who'd reached the finals with a pair of wins Friday afternoon, defeated Bucknell's Anton Kovic and Gregg Cohenca, 8-3, to earn the championship.
Kwei breezed to the semifinals of Flight "B" Singles with straight sets victories against Bryant's Kevin Gardiner (6-3, 6-3) and UConn's Ricardo Cardona (6-1, 6-0). Once in the semifinals, Kwei faced stiff competition from Fairfield's Erik Kremheller, before defeating the Stags' freshman, 6-3, 1-6, 10-2, to advance to the finals against Weeden.
Weeden, who won a three-set marathon to advance to the quarterfinals Friday, needed only two sets apiece in the quarterfinals and semifinals. He defeated Sacred Heart's Jacob Miller, 7-5, 6-4, in the quarterfinals before sailing past Bryant's Nicholai Hill, 6-2, 6-1, in the semifinals.
Feldman won a pair of matches Saturday to advance to the semifinals. He defeated Boston University's Alex Green, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round, before coming from behind to outlast Bucknell's Clark Bogle, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
