FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshmen Alex Lazerowich (Stratham, N.H.) and Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.J.) began their collegiate careers with three wins as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team opened the 2009-10 season at the Fairfield Doubles Festival. Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.), James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.), John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.), Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) and Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) all picked up a pair of wins for the Bobcats.
Lazerowich and Weeden went 2-1 in the round robin portion of Flight Three to advance to the Third Place Match, where they made quick work of Fairfield's Bob Kelly and Mike Lessing. In round robin competition, Lazerowich and Weeden also defeated teams from Bryant and Fairfield.
Mikkelson and Kwei paired to reach to the Flight One Championship. The duo defeated teams from Bryant and UConn, while falling to Fairfield's Joe Michaelisin and Rob Ferrante in both the round robin and championship rounds.
Hughes and Feldman also advanced to the championship round, this time at Flight Two. Like Mikkelson and Kwei, Hughes and Feldman earned wins against Bryant and UConn, while falling twice to Fairfield's duo, Ryan Berthod and Dan Sauter. Both were tightly contested matches, but the Bobcats fall, 8-6, in the round robin, and 8-7 (7-3), in the championship.
Kraus competed with Fairfield's Erik Kremheller to advance to the Flight Three Championship. The duo defeated teams from Fairfield and UConn in the round robin and advanced to the championship on the head-to-head tie breaker against Fairfield. Kraus and Kremheller were defeated by UConn's Yoon and Dave Adams, 8-1, in the championship.
The Bobcats return to action Friday, Sept. 25, when they take part in the UConn Invitational. Matches are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
