Men's Tennis Defeats Villanova, 4-3

HAMDEN, Conn. – Tom Curran (Fairfield, Conn.) earned wins in both singles and doubles as the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team defeated Villanova, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon on the Quinnipiac Outdoor Tennis Courts. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 7-5, while the Wildcats fall to 4-11.

John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) and Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) also earned singles wins. The doubles duos of Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Curran and Joe Nuara (Little Silver, N.J.) each took doubles wins.

The Bobcats won at No. 1 (Mikkelson/Kwei) and No. 3 (Curran/Nuara) to take the doubles point. Hughes then made quick work of Brian Maher, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles to put the Bobcats up, 2-0. The Wildcats cut the deficit in half when Kwei fell to Trenton Alenik, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.

Curran put the Bobcats up, 3-1, when he took the first of four three-set decisions on the day. He defeated John Drosik, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. The Bobcats clinched the match when Lane bounced back from a 6-0 defeat in the first set to Dave Shaheen, to win, 0-6, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 3.

Villanova took the final two singles matches at No. 5 and No. 2, both three-set decisions. Alex Hanno defeated Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.), 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 5 before Alex Leeser beat Mikkelson, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, at No. 2.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday, when they travel to West Long Branch, N.J., to take on Northeast Conference foe Monmouth. Matches are slated to begin at 3 p.m.
