FAIRFIELD, Conn. Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) were both double winners, but the Quinnipiac University men's tennis team was edged by undefeated Fairfield, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 5-3, while the Stags improve to 10-0. The Bobcats became the first team to take three points from the Stags this season and came just a doubles tie-breaker away from putting the first mark in Fairfield's loss column.
Mikkelson paired with Kwei to defeat Joe Michalisin and Rob Ferrante, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles, before taking Dan Sauter in a third-set tie-breaker at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-7, 10-6. Kwei beat Ferrante, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.
Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) picked up the Bobcats' other win at No. 3 singles, rebounding from a first-set defeat to outlast Aaron Chan, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
After the two teams split the first two doubles matches, Chan and Chip Palumbo held off Lane and Tom Curran (Fairfield, Conn.), 9-8 (7-3), at No. 3 to take the doubles point.
The Stags clinched the match at 4-1, winning No. 5, 1 and 6 singles, while Kwei took the Bobcats' lone point at No. 4 prior to the clincher. Lane and Mikkelson finished the match strong for Quinnipiac, winning at No. 2 and 3.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday, when they travel to Easton, Pa., to take on Lafayette. Matches are set to begin at noon.
