John Hughes Earns Second Consecutive NEC Player of the Week

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University junior men's tennis player John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) has been named Northeast Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced Tuesday. Hughes won the top singles flight at this past weekend's Quinnipiac Invitational a week after winning the No. 1 singles and doubles flights at the Bucknell Invitational. The award is the fifth of Hughes' career and signifies the third straight week that a Bobcat has been recognized.

Hughes defeated Sacred Heart's Kirill Kasyanov in a third-set tie-breaker to win the Quinnipiac Invitational Flight A Singles Championship. Hughes advanced to the finals with a 7-5, 6-1, semifinal victory against Bucknell's Ryan Sandburg. The junior then dropped the first set against Kasyanov, 7-6, before coming from behind to win the second set by the same 7-6 margin. Hughes then took the third-set tie-breaker, 10-3.

Hughes also defeated Boston University's Jeff Chudacoff and Sacred Heart's Chris Ujkic en route to the title. He's now won seven straight singles matches to push his overall record to 17-4 this season.

The Bobcats return to action Thursday at the ITA Regionals in New Haven.
