HAMDEN, Conn. Junior John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.) defeated Sacred Heart's Kirill Kasyanov in a third-set tie-breaker to win the Quinnipiac Invitational Flight A Singles Championship Sunday. Fellow junior Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) reached the finals in Flight C, while seniors Tom Curran (Fairfield, Conn.) and Joe Nuara (Little Silver, N.J.) advanced to the championship of Flight B Doubles, but the Bobcats dropped both matches.
Hughes advanced to the finals with a 7-5, 6-1, semifinal victory against Bucknell's Ryan Sandburg. The junior then dropped the first set against Kasyanov, 7-6, before coming from behind to win the second set by the same 7-6 margin. Hughes then took the third-set tie-breaker, 10-3.
Feldman advance to the Flight C championship with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-6, win against Bucknell's Dan Bednarek, before falling in the title match to Connecticut's Scott Warden. Warden won the match in a third-set tie-breaker, 5-7, 6-4, 10-3.
Curran and Nuara were up a break on Connecticut's Dave Adams and Matt Burns late in the match, but the Huskies ultimately stormed ahead for a 9-7 victory.
The Bobcats return to action next weekend at the ITA Regionals in New Haven.
