FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Quinnipiac University men's tennis team went 11-3 in season-opening action at the Fairfield Doubles Festival, Sunday at Fairfield University. Freshmen James Kwei (Dedham, Mass.) and Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) earned four wins apiece, including the first of each of their careers, to pace the Bobcats.
John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.), Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.), Tom Curran (Fairfield, Conn.) and Joe Nuara (Little Silver, N.J.) won three matches apiece, while Charlie Feldman (Easton, Conn.) and Dillon Kraus (Bayside, N.Y.) each picked up their first win of the season.
The Bobcats went an undefeated 9-0 in round-robin play, before two pairs advanced to finals play. The duos of Kwei/Lane and Curran/Nuara advanced to the No. 2 and No. 3 finals, respectively. Both fell in the final round, Kwei and Lane to Bryant's Jose Rodriguez and Thomas Nowak, 8-6, and Curran and Nuara to Connecticut's Andrew Marcus and Tom Cook, 8-2.
Hughes and Mikkelson defeated teams from Sacred Heart, St. Peter's and NJIT, before falling to Fairfield's Rob Ferrante and Joe Michalisin, 8-5, in the No. 1 semifinals.
The Bobcats return to action Sept. 26, when they travel to Storrs, Conn., to take part in the UConn Invitational.
