Despite A Strong Defensive Effort, Bobcats Drop First Game to Northwestern, 2-0

EVANSTON, Ill. – Fresh off one of the best seasons in program history, the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team began its quest for a third straight regular season title at Northwestern on Friday night. After a strong defensive effort between both teams, Northwestern slipped through to find multiple scores late and defeat the Bobcats 2-0 at Lakeside Field.

The first half was a defensive stalemate as only one shot was recorded through the first 45 minutes. Northwestern freshman Elo Ozumba took the lone strike that was stopped by Quinnipiac's 2013 MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, Borja Angoitia.

After 56 minutes of hard-nosed defense, Northwestern sophomore forward, Nathan Dearth put a header on goal off a corner kick from Brandon Medina. Quinnipiac goalkeeper Borja Angoitia saved the shot attempt, but defenseman Nikko Boxall found the back of the net with the rebound. Both Dearth and Medina were credited with the first Northwestern assists of the season.

The insurance goal was added by the Wildcats in the 89th minute as Sam Forsgren took a pass from the goalkeeper and fed it to junior forward Joey Calistri for the score.

Northwestern came into the game ranked sixth in the BIG TEN preseason poll. The Wildcats are boasting three players on the preseason players to watch list, including the two goal scorers on the night; Calistri, senior defenseman Nikko Boxall and senior goalkeeper Tyler Miller. The last line of defense also found recognition on the 2014 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy watch list. Miller captured eight shutouts despite missing five games in the 2013 regular season.

Quinnipiac drops to (O-1-0) on the season as their BIG TEN opponent advances to (1-0-0) with a win in the first all-time matchup between the teams.

Up next, Quinnipiac remains at Lakeside Field to resume play against the Northern Illinois Huskies in Evanston. The Bobcats are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 12 PM for the first meeting between the two teams.
