Men's Soccer Plays To 0-0 Draw Against Iona In MAAC Opener

Quinnipiac and Iona played through 110 minutes of grueling back-and-forth action before both teams settled for a 0-0 draw at the QU Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac goes to 2-3-4 overall while it opens MAAC play at 0-0-1. Iona lines up in the same line in league action while they go to 3-4-2 overall. 

The Bobcats held a considerable advantage in shots for the game, outshooting its opponent, 17-8 overall and 9-5 on shots-on-goal. Quinnipiac keeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) picked up his fourth shutout in his last five games, this time stopping all five shots from the Iona offense. Angoitia also picked up his 10th career shutout, joining Freddy Hall as the only two keepers in program history with 10 clean sheets. 

Angoitia's counterpart, Iona's Julian Petrello recorded nine saves for the afternoon. Quinnipiac also doubled-up the Gaels in corner kicks, hosting a 6-3 edge in the category. Both teams fired off three shots on goal in the first half, with Quinnipiac's Simon Hinde (Canberra, Australia) denied twice on the Gaels' doorstep while Iona's Ignacio Maganto also had a stab at the Bobcats goal. In the second frame, Quinnipiac took it to Iona, outshooting the Gaels, 6-2, with Justin Ward (New Egypt, N.J.) and James Doig (Manchester, England) showcasing two good looks while Hinde and Brandon Strain-Goode (Toronto, Ontario) also threatened late. 

Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when it makes the long trip North to take on Niagara University in a MAAC match-up set for 2 p.m. Quinnipic is back home the following week when it hosts Marist on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. and Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.
