HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's soccer junior Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) was named to the College Sports Madness MAAC Preseason All-Conference First Team, announced on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 by the website. College Sports Madness picked the top players in college soccer for the 2013 season and expects these players to make significant contributions to their team in the upcoming season.
Angoitia, a 6' 2" goalkeeper from Bilbao, Spain, anchored the Bobcats' defense in 2012. He started in all 18 games, posting a 10-5-2 record and a total of five shutouts. He also finished with a microscopic 1.12 goals against average and a .788 save percentage. In addition to his contributions on the defensive side of the ball, Angoitia helped out on offense as well. Angoitia tallied an assist in the 2-0 win over Saint Francis University, when he launched a dropkick to Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) who finished the play with the game's second goal.
Angoitia's spectacular season pushed his name into Quinnipiac's record-books where his name will stand for quite some time. He is tied for first with most wins in a single season, ranks fifth all-time in lowest goals against average for a single season, while also ranking fifth in most shutouts in a single season. In just two years between the posts, Angoitia is second in all-time goals against average (1.14) and third in shutouts (6) and wins (16).
Quinnipiac's quest for a second straight regular season conference title begins on Friday, Aug. 30 at Providence College. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
