Men’s Soccer Head Coach Eric Da Costa Adds Two More to 2013 Roster
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University men's soccer head coach Eric Da Costa has announced that Raphael Carvalho (Danbury, Conn.) and Ashton Pett (Auckland, New Zealand) will join the Bobcats roster for the 2013 season. Carvalho and Pett both have collegiate playing experience and will provide an immediate impact in Quinnipiac's quest for a second consecutive regular season title.
Raphael Carvalho – Midfield – Danbury, Conn. – Danbury High School
Raphael Carvalho comes to Quinnipiac from Herkimer Community College out of Herkimer County, New York. Carvalho endured quite a bit of success at HCC, where he led the soccer team to back-to-back NJCAA National Championships in 2011 and 2012. A two-year starter and team captain, he was named to the 2012 NSCAAJC Men's Soccer Scholar All-America team after leading the Generals to a 20-2 mark in 2012.
"Raphael impressed me right away," said Da Costa. "He has excellent technical ability but is very much a blue collar player. His work rate is fantastic and his ability to play well in different positions will be a valuable asset to for the team. As a two time National Champion he is a proven winner and that attitude will fit in well here."
Prior to HCC, Carvalho was a four-year starter for the Danbury High School soccer team. He was named to the Connecticut All-State Team three years in a row, while garnering All-CSC Conference accolades in each of his four seasons. He was a two-time captain, as a junior and senior, and selected as the Mad Hatters' Most Outstanding Athlete in 2010.
Ashton Pett – Defense – Auckland, New Zealand – Kelston Boys High School
Ashton Pett will join the Bobcats in 2013 after a two-year stint with the Jacksonville University men's soccer team. A two-year starter and team captain, Pett started in every game (37) while compiling three assists from a defensive role. As a freshman in 2011, he logged a team high 1688 minutes and was part of a back line that produced three shutouts on the season. At season's end, he was named to Atlantic Sun All-Rookie Team.
"Ashton will be joining our squad with both collegiate and international experience," said Da Costa. "He has competed in a Youth World Cup and two years at the division I level. These experiences should add to the program immediately. Ashton is an excellent defender with the tools and capabilities to help us attack out of the back as well. He will complement our group of players very well and we look forward to his addition."
Prior to Jacksonville University, Pett was a four-year starter at Kelston Boys High School in Auckland, New Zealand. In addition to his high school soccer obligations, he played on a U-19 secondary team that toured the United Kingdom for matches in Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales. Pett also played for the club team Waitakere City Men's Premier, earning "Player of the Year" and "Youth Player of the Year" in helping his squad finish third in the Northern Premier League. Prior to that, Pett represented New Zealand in the Under-17 World Cup in Nigeria.
Carvalho and Pett join a successful Bobcats program that will embark on a challenging MAAC schedule next season. In their most recent campaign, the Bobcats claimed their first Northeast Conference Regular Season Title in program history at the strength of an 8-1-1 mark in league play. Quinnipiac made five trips to the NEC Tournament – nearly capturing its first NCAA Tournament berth back in 2009.
