NEWTOWN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University soccer partnered with Major League Soccer (MLS) and CFC Azul to host a special "Soccer Night in Newtown" on Monday, January 7, 2013. The event was held from 4-8 p.m. at the Newtown Youth Academy Sports & Fitness Center in Newtown. More than 30 members of the men's and women's soccer programs participated in the event that attracted nearly 1,500 people.
Along with several former and current soccer stars, which included the likes of Landon Donovan, Mia Hamm, Christine Lilly, Cobi Jones, Alexi Lalas and Brian Ching, Quinnipiac worked in conjunction with the MLS and CFC Azul to put on a Soccer Night in Newtown. The event featured autographs, fun soccer games, photographs, Q & A sessions, laughter and smiles.
The event started with a phone call from Chris Canetti, President of the Houston Dynamo and former QU baseball player, three days after the tragedy in Newtown. Canetti contacted men's soccer head coach Eric Da Costa and the two decided to host a night of soccer for children in the area. Canetti reached out to MLS W.O.R.K.S. Community Service Program, a collaborative effort to combine sport and service, which brought in soccer stars from all over. The night was a tremendous success.
