HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) recorded a second consecutive shutout and three different Bobcats scored on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team downed Mount St. Mary's, 3-0, on a windy day at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus. Freshman Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand) and sophomore Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) each scored their first career goals, as the Bobcats improved to 6-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the Northeast Conference.

"The key word is 'team,'" said head coach Eric Da Costa. "We work in training on a number of different things, keeping the ball one of them, and everyone is responsible for that. Every player has an important role to play and we need everyone to contribute, so it's very nice to see three goals from three different players."

Action in this one didn't pick up until midway through the opening stanza, when William Daniels (Clackamas, Ore.) and Sam Nicol (Edinburgh, Scotland) sparked the Bobcat offense. Quinnipiac capitalized on a Mountaineer turnover in the middle of the pitch, which in turn resulted in the game's first legitimate chance on target. On the backend of the play, Daniels found Nicol inside the penalty area; who had his blast saved by MSM goalkeeper Peter Steve. Nonetheless, momentum swung in favor of the Bobcats, momentum that helped produce the first goal of the game.

As they have done all season long, the Bobcats capitalized on a free-kick from outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field. Nicol whipped in a right-footed cross where Panzer timed his leap perfectly and directed a header into the left corner of the net for his first career goal. Panzer's tally served as the lone goal in the first half, leaving the Bobcats in front at halftime, 1-0.

After the break, Quinnipiac's offense provided its defense with some breathing room by adding two insurance goals just 13 minutes into the stanza. The first one featured a tremendous cross from Stevenson Hawkey (Pennington, N.J.) where Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) smashed home his first career goal for a 2-0 advantage. Hawkey was credited with his third career point on the play.

Eight minutes later, Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wis.) put the nail in the coffin with left-footed strike from the top of the 18-yard box. Simon Hinde (Canberra, Australia) won a forcefully won a header that sent Suprise in behind the MSM defense for a breakaway. The senior forward made no mistake and buried his seven goal of the season.

The three-goal cushion was plenty for Angoitia and the Bobcat defense, recording the team's second straight shutout and third of the campaign. The Bobcats last posted back-to-back clean sheets in 2010 when they blanked NJIT and Sacred Heart in October. Angoitia made six saves in his sixth win of the year.

The Bobcats are back in action with a pair of NEC games in Pennsylvania next weekend. QU takes on Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday afternoon, before heading to Robert Morris on Sunday.
