Quigley, Bobcats Upend Sacred Heart, 1-0; Men's Soccer Improves To 2-0 In NEC
HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Tim Quigley (Ridgefield, Conn.) netted the game's lone goal on Friday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team upended Sacred Heart University, 1-0, at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus. With the win, the Bobcats climb back to the .500 mark at 4-4-1, but more importantly improve to 2-0 in the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers, the 2011 NEC regular-season champions, fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in league competition.
"I am very happy with the way we played today," said Head Coach Eric Da Costa, who now remains just one win shy of 50 for his career at Quinnipiac. "All it takes is one goal and then to keep the opponent off the scoreboard. Conference games are always a battle and Sacred Heart's the defending regular-season champion, so I'm very proud of the way our guys stuck to the game plan and executed the strategy to walk away with the win."
For the fourth straight game, Quinnipiac boasted a strong start with a goal in the first half. In the 19th minute of play, the Bobcats drew a free-kick deep in the Pioneer zone – which allowed Robbie McLarney (Londonderry, N.H.) to do what he does best. McLarney whipped a perfect cross in from the left wing, where Quigley beat his defender and flicked a header past the SHU goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. QU continued its success with set-pieces this season, as Quigley's marker served as the team's fifth consecutive goal on a free-kick for the Bobcats.
After the goal, sophomore goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) and the Bobcats defense became the focal point in the match. In search of his first clean sheet of the season, Angoitia faced a tall task of 12 SHU shots, six of which were on frame. Fortunately for the Bobcats, Angoitia was up for the challenge, turning aside all six shots to preserve the 1-0 goal shutout.
The win improves QU to 16-9 all-time against Sacred Heart, including their 11th straight win at the QU Soccer Field. Furthermore, the Bobcats improve to 2-0 in Northeast Conference competition for the fourth time since joining the NCAA's top division.
For the match, Sacred Heart controlled a 12-4 advantage in shots, and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Daniel Nicinski and Tucker Hackett split time between the posts for the Pioneers, neither needing to register a save on the afternoon.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, October 7 with their third Northeast Conference match of the season. The Bobcats travel for a 1 p.m. tilt against LIU Brooklyn. The game will be played at LIU Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.
