Daniels, MacLarney Lead Men's Soccer Past Holy Cross, 2-1
WORCESTER, Mass. – Seniors William Daniels (Clackamas, Ore.) and Robbie McLarney (Londonderry, N.H.) combined for a pair of first half goals to lead the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Holy Cross on Thursday night at the Linda J. Smith Soccer Stadium.
The Bobcats, now 1-1 on the young season, used strong effort on both sides of the ball for the team's first win. The hosting Crusaders dropped to 0-1 with the loss.
Quinnipiac grabbed an early 1-0 lead in this one, as the visiting Bobcats manufactured the game's first goal in the 14th minute of play. Daniels, who picked up his sixth career goal in the season-opener, capitalized on his first chance of the contest. The senior forward tucked a shot into the bottom right corner after receiving a useful pass from fellow classmate, Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wis.).
Holy Cross wasted very little time to find the equalizer though, as the Crusaders exploited an unlucky bounce in the Bobcats' penalty area. Josh Cintas collected the deflection and buried a shot into the bottom left corner, knotting the game up at one apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) and counterpart Michael Thompson preserved the deadlock for another 20 minutes before the game's next goal. In the waning minutes of the opening stanza, Quinnipiac was awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute. McLarney stepped up and calmly slipped one passed Thompson for a 2-1 Bobcat lead.
The second half featured a scoreless defensive battle; a result that Quinnipiac Head Coach Eric Da Costa was happy to have. The Bobcats withstood a last stitch effort from the Crusaders en route to their third straight win against the Patriot League rival.
Quinnipiac held a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Angoitia turned aside three shots in his seventh career win for the Bobcats, while Thompson made two saves for Holy Cross.
Quinnipiac is back in action this weekend, when the Bobcats host Lafayette on Sunday, September 2. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the QU Soccer Field.
