NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Freshman Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored off a Dominic Adams (John Dial, Trinidad and Tobago) assist in the 82nd minute as the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team defeated Central Connecticut, 1-0, Friday night at the Arute Field. With the win, the Bobcats (9-3-6, 6-2-2 NEC) clinch at least the No. 3 seed in next weekend's Northeast Conference Tournament. The Blue Devils end the season at 6-10-1 (1-8-1 NEC).
"It was good for us to turn it around and head into the NEC Tournament with a win," said head coach Eric Da Costa. "Our team needed this victory after a down weekend and our goal was to head into the postseason on a high note."
Quinnipiac could finish as high as the No. 2 seed, should St. Francis (N.Y.) lose tomorrow against Long Island. The Bobcats could also claim second position with a combination of a St. Francis (N.Y.) tie and a Fairleigh Dickinson win or tie tonight at Sacred Heart.
Senior goalkeeper Freddy Hall (St. George, Bermuda) shut out the Blue Devils, stopping two shots to earn the victory. He now has nine shutouts this season. Chris Jones and Paul Armstrong split time in net for the Blue Devils, with each making one save. Armstrong took the loss, allowing Suprise's game winner.
On the game winner, Adams passed across the 18-yard box to find Suprise open on the right side of the net. The freshman deposited it into the back of the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the year, including his third game-winning goal during his first season with Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac will play Friday in the NEC Tournament Semifinals in West Long Branch, N.J. The Monmouth Hawks will host the conference's postseason for the fifth time in a row after again capturing the regular season title. Times and matchups have yet to be determined.
