Stony
Brook University Seawolves (1-6-1)
Wednesday,
September 23, 2009 - 4 p.m.
Quinnipiac
Soccer Field - Hamden, Conn.
Wednesday's
Game
The
Quinnipiac University men's soccer team takes on Stony Brook on
Wednesday, Sept. 23 in the second contest of a six-game homestand.
The Bobcats are coming off a 2-2 tie with Iona on Sept. 19 and
remain undefeated this season at 2-0-3. Quinnipiac is one of just
two Northeast Conference teams without a loss this season. The
Bobcats' defensive play has contributed to the unblemished record
and has surrendered just three goals in five games, the second
fewest in the NEC.
Scouting
Stony Brook
The
Seawolves come to Hamden with a 1-6-1 record and a 1-3-1 mark on
the road. Berian Gobeil and Leonardo Fernandes lead the team, each
scoring three goals and two assists for eight points in 2009.
Stefan Manz and Anthony Rogic have split time in goal this season
for the Seawolves with Manz starting five contests and Rogic three.
Stony Brook's lone win this season came against NEC opponent Bryant
Sept. 6 at Smithfield, R.I., 3-0. The Seawolves fell in both
contests of the Aces Invitational in Evansville, Ind., last
weekend. Stony Brook dropped the first game, 2-0, to
Eastern-Illinois before losing to the tournaments hosts from
Evansville, 5-3.

What a
Suprise
It took
freshman forward Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wis.) until the team's
fifth game to score his first-career goal, but that tally proved to
be an important one for the Bobcats. After Quinnipiac fell behind
2-1 midway through the first half, Suprise broke in on net. After
being spun around by a defender, he put a shot off in the inside of
the right post that ricocheted into the back of the net in the 43rd
minute with the game-tying goal
French
First
Junior
defender Pierre Soubrier (Aurignac, France) scored the first goal
of his collegiate career on Saturday as well. Soubrier lined up to
take a free kick from 25 yards out, putting a shot around a
three-man wall and past the Iona goalkeeper into the lower right
corner for the Bobcats' first goal.
Spread
the Wealth
After
Saturday, Quinnipiac has six goals from six different goal scorers.
Five of those have scored their first-career goals in 2009. Joining
Soubrier and Suprise with first collegiate tallies this season has
been Conor Murphy (Wallingford, Conn.), Brett Uttley (Jamestown,
R.I.) and Tim Quigley (Ridgefield, Conn.). Dwayne Mars (St.
Michael, Barbados) is the only goal scorer this season to have
previously netted a marker in his career.
Two Is
Enough
The
Bobcats' two goals against Iona matched a season high set in a 2-0
victory against NJIT. Against the Gaels, each of the team's two
goals followed Iona goals to tie the game. After falling behind
twice in the first half, Quinnipiac responded with the equalizing
goal both times.
Last
Meeting
This is
just the second meeting ever between Quinnipiac and Stony Brook. In
the only other meeting, the Bobcats defeated the Seawolves, 4-0, on
Oct. 9, 1999 in Hamden.
Freddy's
Figures
Senior
goalkeeper Freddy Hall (St. George, Bermuda) had his streak of 361
minutes without allowing a goal snapped in the opening minutes
against Iona. Despite allowing two first-half goals, Hall earned
the tie with seven saves in the game and remains undefeated. The
senior also boasting the eighth-best save percentage (.917) in the
nation.
