BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Graciano Brito (Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde) scored his Northeast Conference-leading 11th goal of the season, but the Quinnipiac University men's soccer team lost to St. Francis (N.Y.) Sunday afternoon, 2-1. The loss drops Quinnipiac's record to 6-3-2 and 1-1 in conference play. The Terriers improve to 9-1-1 overall this season and 2-0 in the NEC.
Brito's goal in the 52nd minute gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. Fabricio Silva (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) assisted on the goal as he passed the ball to Brito streaking down the left side of the field before beating St Francis goalkeeper Chris Antonio to the upper right corner of the goal. The assist moved Silva into a first-place tie with Pierre Soubrier (Aurignac, France) for the team lead.
The Terriers pulled even, 1-1, in the 56th minute. Jeverton Delorenzi beat Quinnipiac goalkeeper Freddy Hall (St. George, Bermuda) to the top right corner of the net. Pontus Werner and John Sallhag picked up assists on the goal.
Anthony Matos score the game-winning goal for the Terriers with just under 30 minutes remaining in the game. Alex Silaco's shot on goal was turned away by Hall, but Matos moved in for his third goal of the year on the rebound.
Hall made five saves in the game, while Antonio stopped six Quinnipiac shots to earn the victory.
The Bobcats next play Friday, Oct. 17, at 3 p.m. when they host Fairleigh Dickinson at the Quinnipiac Soccer Field.
