Messina, Kostaras and Binkowski Named to NEILA Senior Scholar-Athlete Team

HAMDEN, Conn. – Chris Messina (West Islip, N.Y.), Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) and Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.), three team captains of the Quinnipiac University men's lacrosse team, have been selected to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Senior Scholar-Athlete Team, announced on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 by members of the committee.

The NEILA Scholar-Athlete Team acknowledges the graduating seniors from their respective schools who have earned over a 3.0 grade point average and have excelled on the field of competition. Joining the trio of Bobcats on the list were three members of Sacred Heart University to give the Northeast Conference six representatives.

Messina put together his strongest season to date in 2013. He scored three goals and handed out four assists, both serving as career highs for the West Islip, N.Y. native. Messina factored in two goals against Detroit Mercy (3/2) with a goal and an assist, but scored his biggest goal of the season against Sacred Heart (4/13). Messina scored his third goal of the season against the Pioneers which helped Quinnipiac earn a 13-12 win in triple overtime at Campus Field.

Kostaras tallied 28 points for the second time in his career, totaling 18 goals and 10 assists for the Bobcats. The Southlake, Texas native leaves Quinnipiac with his name embedded in the record book in several offensive categories. Kostaras ranks 14th all-time in goals scored (58), 12th in assists (33) and tied for 11th in points (91). Always reliable with the ball in his pocket, Kostaras registered at least one point in 13 of the team's 14 games, which included 10 outings with multiple points. He also notched his third career hat trick in the win over Detroit Mercy on March 2nd.

Binkowski led Quinnipiac's midfield on both sides of the ball this past season. Offensively, the Bethany, Conn. native scored five goals and assisted on three others, while putting nearly 62 percent of his shots on frame. He also collected 15 groundballs and caused 12 turnovers – which tied him for the team lead in the latter category. Binkowski finished his career with 18 goals and nine assists, none bigger than his game-winning assist in overtime against Robert Morris in the 2011 Northeast Conference Semifinals. He also scored a goal in the NEC Semifinals this year against the Colonials.
