FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) netted the game-winner in triple overtime to lift the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team to a crucial NEC win over Sacred Heart, 13-12, in Fairfield Saturday night. With the result, both teams move to 2-1 in league play and into a tie for second place in the standings.
68 minutes couldn't separate the two teams, but in the third overtime Quinnipiac's leading goal-scorer came through in the clutch. Sagl found the back of the net 2:12 seconds into the third frame, sending the Bobcats' sideline in uproar at Campus Field.
Sagl was one of three Bobcats with three or more points on the night, as Brendan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) and Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.) were stellar for QU. Wilbur scored two and assisted on two others for a four-point outing, while Diehl netted two goals and dished out an assist for three points. Basil Kostaras (Southlake, Texas) scored twice for his 54th and 55th career goals and Jake Emms (Victoria, B.C.), Chris Messina (West Islip, N.Y.), Pat Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) and Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario) each added one.
Trailing 11-9 entering the fourth quarter, Quinnipiac needed to overcome a deficit twice in the stanza. Two Bobcat seniors were up to the challenge as Wilbur and Kostaras kept the Q in the game. Wilbur closed the gap to within one with his second goal of the game, and Kostaras knotted the score up at 11 apiece with his 15th goal of the season.
Sacred Heart went back on top with Matt Gannon's loan tally of the game, but the sophomore connection of Diehl and Sagl generated the equalizer. Diehl found a streaking Sagl, who slipped one past SHU goalie Jon Flood to tie the score at 12 apiece. Both attacks went quiet until Sagl netted the game-winner 15 minutes later.
Defensively, QU goalie Gill Conners (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) played a large role in the outcome, recording 18 saves in his fifth win of the season. Conners has at least 10 saves in nine of the 11 games, while posting 15 or more in four of them.
For the game, each team tallied 49 shots – which served as a season-high for Quinnipiac. The Bobcats capitalized on SHU penalties, going 4-of-9 on the man-up.
Sacred Heart, now 2-9 on the season, was led by Cody Marquis who finished with five goals and two assists for a game-high of seven points. Matt King had four goals Gannon dished out four assists in the losing effort.
Quinnipiac resumes Northeast Conference action on April 20th with its final home game of the regular season. The Bobcats will host Wagner College at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field in Hamden. Prior to the 12 p.m. faceoff, Quinnipiac will honor its senior class members as part of Senior Day on Mount Carmel Campus.
